Turning Dreams Into Code
A proven strategy for unlocking the potential of an app idea and turning it into a reality.
A Fleeting Thought
Have you ever thought, “I wish there were an app for that…“? We’ve all had those moments where a brilliant app idea pops into our minds. It’s so vivid and perfect that you almost believe it must already exist, only to discover it doesn’t. Or perhaps it does exist, but it falls short of your expectations, leaving you with a burning desire to create something better. If only you knew how to bring it to life, you’d do it in a heartbeat. I find myself in this situation all the time. But don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. Here are five steps to turn that fleeting thought into a tangible reality.
I wish there were an app that...
5 Steps to Making Your Dream App
Step 1: Engage Your Imagination
When was the last time someone encouraged you to daydream? As children, we freely let our minds wander. Unfortunately, as we grow older, we’re often led to believe that daydreamers are irresponsible. The issue isn’t wandering; it’s failing to navigate the wilderness of our minds. It’s in this wilderness that our most incredible breakthroughs occur. For me, these moments often happen while I’m sitting on the toilet.
The journey of achieving the impossible begins with a spark of imagination. Think about the problems you face in your daily life and how technology could solve them. Allow yourself to dream without boundaries. Visualize the features, user experience, and potential impact your app could have. This is the foundation of your journey.
Step 2: Take Your First Step
I remember when my oldest son, David, was an infant and took his first steps. It was incredible. Well, to be honest, it wasn’t that spectacular from an objective viewpoint. He stood there, clinging to the couch, calculating in his little mind how he would get to me. When he finally let go, he stumbled and fumbled into my arms. It wasn’t a fantastic sight, but to me, it was AWESOME. Our dreams are similar.
Just like David, taking your first step is often the hardest. It requires moving from the comfort of dreaming to the reality of doing. Research your idea. Is there a market for it? Who are your competitors? What tools and skills will you need? Any small step counts. You may stumble, but it will be AWESOME. Why? Because you took action to make your dream a reality. Remember, every journey begins with a single step.
Step 3: Overcome resistance
Do you spring out of bed in the morning or hit the snooze button when you wake up? If you’re like me, it feels like a heavy lead blanket is covering you, luring you to stay in bed with its perfect warmth. Also, you hear a sweet, quiet voice whisper all the right lullabies in your ear to keep you in the sleep trance you’re so thoroughly enjoying. Then you glance at the clock and realize… YOU’RE LATE! You have to fight this urge. Resist the blanket of resistance.
As you start building your app, you’ll inevitably face resistance. It could be technical challenges, doubts about your abilities, or even criticism from others. Embrace these obstacles as opportunities to learn and grow. Naturally, giving up is much easier, but if you show me someone who always takes the comfortable path, I’ll show you someone mediocre. GET UP! Face your issues head-on. Persistence is key. Every problem you solve brings you one step closer to your dream.
Step 4: Embrace the Journey
If you’re as old as I am, you might remember going to the department store and heading straight to the toy section. You’d get so absorbed in the world of possibilities that you wouldn’t notice your family leaving. Eventually, you’d have to ask a clerk to call them over the loudspeaker. Embarrassing, but you had a great time. If you survived, that store visit was a success.
Success is enjoying the journey of many mini-successes. Creating software is a journey, not a destination. Enjoy the process of learning, experimenting, and iterating. Celebrate your small victories along the way. No, it won’t always be sunshine and rainbows, and yes, there will be times you’re scared to death, but everything will be ok. Stay open to feedback and be willing to pivot if necessary. Embrace the entire journey because this is where you’ll grow most.
Step 5: Keep Going
The first time I went kayaking, I was terrified. We had to paddle downstream for 20 miles, but I had no idea what that entailed. When we arrived, I saw professional kayakers who seemed to be preparing for the Olympics. But the worst part was yet to come. The riverbed was so low that there was no current. When I looked back, the buses that had dropped us off had already left. We had only one option: Keep Paddling!
There will be times when you may feel like giving up. In these moments, you have to remind yourself why you started. Revisit your initial vision and the impact your app could have. Stay focused and motivated, and keep pushing forward. Your dream is within reach, so don’t give up.
